Advocacy Work

During medical school, I interviewed President Obama in a live "fireside chat" which was sponsored by Google and YouTube. You can watch it by clicking here. Please keep in mind that this work in no way reflects my political beliefs. I have worked with patients at every point on the spectrum between liberal and conservative, and I have actually found that discussing these sensitive topics is often very beneficial in the treatment process.

As part of my medical residency training, I worked with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to help streamline the process for psychiatric inpatient admission, which has become an increasingly difficult statewide issue over the last several years. Working with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, we created a protocol to speed up the medical clearance process in the ER, which is currently being studied in different clinical facilities around the state. I have also worked with the Illinois State Medical Society and Chicago Medical Society on outreach projects.

About Me

Hello, and thank you very much for visiting my website. When you are looking for a psychiatrist, it's natural to want to know about that person's background, as it will affect the way that he or she approaches your care. If you are looking to start treatment, I hope that the information on this page will help you to get to know me a  bit before your first session.

I was born and raised in Michigan, and attended medical school at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, one of the country's best-ranked training institutions. I was taught by some incredibly bright individuals during my four years of medical school, some of whom have won Nobel prizes for their work, and others who were nationally known for their contributions to the medical field. My biggest lesson here was that true, genuine passion is needed to be successful as a physician, and I took that lesson very seriously. Through a variety of interesting experiences in medical school, I discovered my passion for mental health, seeing it as endlessly fascinating and a source of deep gratification when I was able to get through to someone who was struggling. I took that energy to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for my medical residency training, and for four more years, I worked in all sorts of intense clinical settings, and at a level of rigor much higher than your typical residency program.

My training included extensive work at the University of Michigan's flagship main hospital, and whether I was seeing someone struggling with recovery from surgery, coming to grips with a chronic illness, or trying to get through a difficult substance use issue, I found the work to be highly engaging. I also worked with people in  outpatient settings, providing medication management, several types of individual therapy, couple's therapy, and much more. My training also included clinical work at Washtenaw County Community Mental Health and Ypsilanti Family Health Center, which are clinics focused on patients with serious mental illness who lack access to quality care. I also spent much of my free time moonlighting at a local clinic in Ann Arbor, further bolstering an already intense set of clinical experiences, and completed specialized psychoanalytic training with the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.

I have also had many unique experiences outside of the medical field, including running my own computer repair business and working on community advocacy campaigns, which helped me to gain a broad base of knowledge that continues to inform my treatment approach today. As much as possible, I try to balance both theoretical and practical approaches to improving your life.

I'm interested in your self-development and growth as an individual, not just in improving your symptoms. I want you to learn from the dark times in order to grow, allowing you to reach your true potential. I want to help you to feel that your life is meaningful, and that there is a greater purpose to your existence in the world. When you can fully accept who you are -- both the strengths and the weaknesses -- the possibility for change is created.

Feel free to take a look around the site, and please contact me if you have any questions about my therapeutic approach or how I can best assist you. My blog might also be worth a read if you are interested in how I look at things. I look forward to hearing from you!
